PTE Study Plan: Preparation, Practice, and Mastery

PTE is a popular exam amongst international students in Australia for its importance in immigration and getting a permanent visa. If you are a non-native English speaker, the PTE exam will be a huge thing for you. Not to pressure you, but you have to pass it with flying colours. Fortunately, it won’t cause an arm and a leg. Passing the test is just like any other, with the right amount of preparation and mastery, you don’t have to worry about anything. What is PTE and its format? We will look into it in this article.

Know the Test Format

As they say, to defeat your enemy, you must become your enemy. In this case, you just need to know what the test entails in order for you to know what to study and what to concentrate on. Knowing the test format gives you an idea on what to anticipate so you don’t get caught off guard.

Part 1: Speaking and Writing

There are three parts to the test. The first is where your speaking and writing will be gauged. You will be asked to create spoken English in an academic environment based on different topics. When it comes to writing, you are to create responses with correct grammar and spelling.

Part 2: Reading

In this part, your capacity to read and understand English will be tested. It will be through a series of skills items that will range from multiple-choice, re-ordering paragraphs, and filling in the blanks. The concept is to gauge how much you can understand and interpret information fed to you in English.

Part 3: Listening

Among all the three parts, this is the most challenging. An audio or video clip will be played and you are required to listen to it as best as you can. You will be allowed to take notes, but it will only be played once. You will then answer a series of tests based on what you listened to.

Practice Your English

The PTE exam tests all aspects of the English language, from creating your own response to comprehension through reading and listening. The point is to determine whether or not you are capable of integrating into a society of English speakers. With that said, it tests your practical language skills, so skip the books and learn in a practical way.

Practice Speaking Everywhere

Learning language doesn’t choose a time or place. If you can do it, then you should, especially if you are still starting out. There is a difference between learning with the books and using it in application. The latter allows you to integrate the language in your subconscious, making it easier to respond and comprehend faster.

Join English-Speaking Groups

Remember, you are not the only person trying to take and pass the PTE exam. There are lots more like you and they themselves need practice. So, there are English-speaking groups around you with the goal to learn and master.

Groups like these are give and take. You help them and they help you. It’s what makes it a great learning experience that will easily step up your English skills.

Don’t Forget About Writing

One of the easier ways to practice English is through writing. You don’t need a partner and you can take your time thinking about what you will say. So, create a journal or diary. Better yet, use every writing opportunity you can get to use English, that includes creating emails, messages, and much more.

Remember that writing is different from speaking. It doesn’t mean you are good at speaking, you will be great at writing and vice versa. You need to practice the two individually.

Level Things Up

If you think you have had enough practice and you are at the top of your game, try challenging yourself. Master the language even more by putting yourself in difficult situations. You think you can comprehend in English? Why don’t you put yourself in a crowded and a noisy environment and try to read?

You will be taking the PTE exam alongside other takers. It will be relatively silent, but in most cases, there will always be noise. The murmuring as takers do what they can, the sudden noise of moving tables, and much more. Will you get distracted or will you keep on answering and be at the top of your game?

Remember, you can expect ideal conditions, but it is best to be prepared for the worst outcome. Make sure that regardless of the situation, you will answer as best as you can. The best way to do this is to practice in realistic situations like reading at the park, listening in a noisy train, and many more. It will be difficult at first but it will develop your concentration, ability to recognize words, and improve your comprehension.

In Conclusion

The PTE exam is important, that is without a doubt. However, it is an exam that is meant to gauge the skills of its takers. It is not meant to fail people and make them miserable. Thus, it can be passed with flying colors and there is a way to do that. All it takes is the right preparation and dedication.
